Except for announced breaks or vacations (noted above, if any), Kannon Zendo offers meditation at 6:45 on Wednesday evenings.  As usual there are two 30' periods of meditation, with walking meditation in between, all followed by tea.  If you are new to meditation, please call Henry at 661-6874 to schedule an orientation.  Click here for calendar of retreats & other events.

Henry also leads a sit at 8 a.m. on Sunday mornings at the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos in the "Uniteens" Room on the second floor, north side, about half-way down the hall.  We are currently finishing How God Changes Your Brain, by Newberg & Waldman.  Next book soon TBA.

About Kannon Zendo

Kannon Zendo is a Zen Meditation Center in Los Alamos, NM.  It is named after the Bodhisattva of Compassion, originally known in India as the male Avalokiteshvara, in Tibet as Chenresi, and later in China as the female Kwan Yin, whose statue  stands in the Kannon Zendo.  Being "the one who hears the cries of the world," she is said to bring solace and aid to whomever asks in deep sincerity for her assistance.  Avalokiteshvara is known Japan as  Kanzeon or Kannon.  

The Zendo is open to the public at selected times for Zen meditation. Weekly sittings are held on Wednesday evenings starting at 6:45 p.m..  There are two thirty minute meditation periods with ten minutes of walking meditation in between. Tea is served afterwards. The Kannon Zendo also offers periodic day-long meditation retreats (zazenkais) on Saturdays.    See the Calendar for dates and more information. These retreats generally start at 8:00 a.m. (arrival at 7:30 a.m.), and end in late afternoon. Those wishing to attend should contact Chigen.  Half day attendance is OK, starting either at 8:00 a.m.  or 1 p.m..  Notify Chigen if you plan to attend either full or part-time.  Cost: half-day $20, full-day $35.  Please register and pay in advance.  Lunches are usually informal BYO affairs.  If the lunch is formal, Oriyoki equipment is available for rent.

The Zendo also hosts occasional potluck suppers and/or Buddhist-related video-movies or recorded Dharma talks.  See the Calendar for dates.

The Kannon Zendo generally follows  the practice protocols observed in the centers of its parent lineage, the Zen Center of Los Angeles and Zen Mountain Monastery in New York State.   If willing to follow these protocols, meditators in any tradition are welcome.  The Kannon Zendo is located at 35 Barranca Road in Los Alamos (Click here for directions).
