Biography

   

Henry Chigen Finney holds a Ph.D. in sociology from UC Berkeley and an MFA in painting from Pratt Institute in New York.  He taught at the University of Vermont for over twenty before moving to Los Alamos in 1995, where he currently paints and writes. 

He began his Zen studies in 1984 with Roshi John Daido Loori, Abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery in New York State.  In 2000 Dr. Finney was ordained as a Senior in his lineage by Sensei Jitsudo Ancheta. Chigen  has also studied with Roshi Joan Halifax, Abbot of the Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Sensei Musai Walter, guiding teacher at the Prajna Zendo in Lamy, New Mexico.  He has also attended numerous Vipassana retreats.  He is an active member of the Great Mountain Zen Center (see links) in Lafayette, Colorado, where he is currently studying with Roshi Gerry Shishin Wick.
