NEWS AND PAST EVENTS
August 6 - 16, Great Heart Retreat: Chigen (KZ Director) just returned from a nine-day "Great Heart Retreat" at the Great Mountain Zen Center in Colorado with Roshi Shishin Wick and Sensei Shinko Perez. Based on a solid foundation of sitting meditation, these retreats are offer a process for participants to get in touch and make peace with long-unresolved inner conflicts that may be hindering deeper Zen practice. The retreats, which are offered in various forms over the year, combine meditation, use of Perez and Wick's book, Great Heart Way, and facilitated voice dialogue technique. The retreat also offered Chigen the opportunity to resume koan study as a senior student in his lineage, to which both Perez and Wick belong.

NOVEMBER 2004 CLASS
"INTRODUCTION TO ZEN PRACTICE" At the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos. This introductory evening class was held on Thursday evenings from October 7 through November 11, 2004, at the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos. Each class began and ended with short periods of meditation. A theme that developed during the six 2 1/2 hr. meetings was "why meditate?" That is, why are the benefits of meditation well worth the time and effort involved? The class also covered progressively more specific meditation instruction over the six classes, as well as such Buddhist fundamentals as the Four Noble Truths, Zen Ethics (the "precepts"), the Three Treasures and the so-called "gates" to practice. Though geared for beginners, the relative "veterans" found it informative.
